Potential Challenges

As high impulse control often means a more deliberate thought process around a decision and a higher awareness of risks and consequences. Some of the potential challenges in the workplace may include risk aversion, less openness to new experiences, slow or absent decision making, difficulty adapting to change, being rigid and overthinking instead of action.

It can also lead to stifling creativity as it can result in an individual being very focused on sticking to the rules and established ways of thinking. Therefore, when taken to an extreme, it can hinder one’s ability to generate new, unconventional ideas, as well as acting and get things done.

Additionally, high impulse control can lead to difficulty with emotional expression because it involves suppressing emotions and urges to maintain control and follow rules or norms. This suppression can make it challenging for individuals with high impulse control to fully express their emotions, leading to difficulties in communication and understanding one’s own feelings and can cause interpersonal struggles.

Depending on what impulses are being suppressed, this process may be energy consuming and come at a more or less high cost.
